ANTIQUE VICTORIAN ERA DOMED LIDDED SPICE TIN YOU CAN SMELL ITS OVER 150 YEARS OLD!
A VICTORIAN SPICE TIN. SURVIVED OVER 150 YEARS! QUITE A RARITY! A ROUND DOMED TOP TIN WITH HINGED LID, HANDLE AND LATCH.
INSIDE IT FEATURES 6 SPICE COMPARTMENTS FOR THE MAIN SPICES OF THE TIME SUCH AS CLOVES, GINGER, CINNAMON AND MACE AND ONE ROUND CENTRAL CYLINDER WHERE A NUTMEG GRATER IS SUPPOSED TO BE FITTED (MISSING).
Centuries ago spice was very precious and exspensive - the casks and the boxes they were stored in reflected their value. In Victorian times spices were kept in these round black tin boxes - often trimmed with gold and red. It would originally have had a small padlock through the lock at the front to keep the contents safe. This is no longer present but the lid closes securely. It is made of black metal and still has the remnants of the painted interior. The round boxes were seperated into compartments with some having a central nutmeg grater. Other spice tins were like a little chest with half a dozen little tins inside.
In the early twentieth century most manufacturers still made tin canisters but increasingly aluminium became a popular modernist alternative. Spice racks started to emerge in the fifties, with ceramic jars replacing tins during the sixties.
