Antique Victorian Green Glass Scent Bottle, Circa 1870-1890 Ref.JW7

On offer is this stunning Victorian Scent bottle in a rich green glass with  silver ends, both ends being hand-embossed. The section for the smelling salts has a screw fitting with a cork stopper, the original cork is still in the end, but is loose.  On the opposite end is the section for perfume, complete with the glass stopper - usually found missing in these scent bottles. This has a hinged end.
The bottle would have been made by melting two separate bottles end-on, creating a ‘double ended’ bottle. Look carefully, and you will see the join.  Finishing would be by hand cutting and polishing a number of flat prism faces, often with elaborate designs.  In the case of the scent bottle as shown, it has 16 kite-shaped prism faces! These perfume or scent bottles can be traced back to around the early 1800’s, however, the one advertised is likely to have been made around the 1870-1890 period. The majority of the bottles were of clear glass, the rich colours of red, blue, green, purple and yellow being somewhat scarce.
These bottles were meant to hold perfume at one end and smelling salts at the other end. The ladies of the day were prone to fainting from being very ‘delicate’, (but, more likely from wearing their corsets too tightly) and the smelling salts were meant to revive them!
