Additional Information

Knowledge about the war over apartheid in South Africa is distorted and sketchy due to censorship and the rebels' need for secrecy. This book focuses on the powerful but shadowy African National Congress and its relationships with other resistance groups. The Congress comes through as a rational and well-organized government-in-exile, not a terrorist-led organization; but it is losing control over the younger participants, who are dedicated to violence. Davis concludes that exhaustion, not conquest, will come to both sides and that the only viable option is for the government to weaken Mandela by releasing him, thus forcing him to negotiate the difficult truce.
