These 7-inch competitors are generally priced low to hook consumers into their respective content marketplaces. While the Google Play store has rapidly grown to rival Apple’s App Store (with each, for all intents and purposes, offering a near-limitless app selection), it has has done so in the facing wind of Apple’s dominance of tablets. Note, though, that some of the growth in the competing Google Play store has piggybacked off the success of Android phones and their apps: Many of the Android apps in the store are intended for smartphone screens and look coarser when sized up, the bigger the screen you put them on. In that way, Apple's app quality control gives the iPads an edge. Likewise, the "bookstore tablets" (from Amazon and Barnes & Noble) are fine choices if you've already bought plenty of content from either bookseller, but on the app front, their stripped-down app stores are nothing like the million-course meal served up by the two big app stores.
All else being equal, Apple still wins on apps. But Apple gear always costs a premium, and that's no different with the iPad Mini, so you'll pay for access to that rich apps experience. Still, in the end, the decision as to whether the iPad Mini is worth the extra outlay over a member of the 7-inch Android tablet pack comes down to those apps and the Apple ecosystem. If you've already accumulated a host of Apple apps from an earlier iPad, or even an iPhone, or loads of movies from the iTunes Store, the Mini's extra cost is a tax worth paying. (And mind you, this is a 7.9-inch tablet, not a 7-incher. The extra cash does get you a good bit more screen.) On the other hand, if you're app-agnostic, don't have any particular affinity for App Store offerings, and after a tablet mostly just for casual browsing and communication, you should try a few of the 7-inchers, notably the Nexus 7, before dropping the extra coin. The iPad Mini is a well-executed piece of tech whose design makes most others look minor-league. But make no mistake: It's a bit pricier than we might have liked.
