There are 4 ports, power, optical audio out, HDMI and Ethernet, the unit also has built in 802.11n WI-FI. You can have multiple Apple TV units in the house, either connected to a TV, Amplifier or simply using speakers as it is Airplay enabled. To control, either use the built in interface or download the apple remote app from the appstore (free) which works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. You can simply play your library to the apple tv device using Airplay, or for example airplay a game to your TV.
