AQUILEGIA OXYSEPALA
Also known as Granny's bonnet and columbine
One of the smaller species, growing to approx. 45 cm, blooms an attractive shade of burgundy. Interestingly, prone to re-bloom here and there later in the summer when happy. Oxysepala, meaning sharp sepals, describes the especially long and pointed sepals (outer structure of the flower) of this columbine. They're a beautiful wine-red, the perfect compliment to the yellow interior petals on these summertime flowers that bloom in lovely clusters. It comes from open areas of forest or rocky exposed meadows of Europe and Asia, currently designated as endangered in Switzerland. This very large, complex flower attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.
