Common Names: Dwarf Columbine or Granny's Nightcap Aquilegia vulgaris is a species of columbine native to Europe. It is an herbaceous perennial plant growing to 1.2 m tall, with branched, thinly hairy stems. The leaves are pinnate, with the basal leaflets themselves trifoliate. In traditional herbalism columbine was considered sacred to Venus; carrying a posy of it was said to arouse the affections of a loved one. Nicholas Culpeper recommended it to ease the pains of childbirth. In modern herbal medicine it is used as an astringent and diuretic. Aquilegia vulgaris blooms in late spring when your garden needs colour the most. It is noted for its striking variegated foliage which is green marbled with yellow or consists entirely of various marbled shades of yellow and cream. Great pick for attracting hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. The plant is wonderful when used for cut flowers.
