Description: Archaic Chinese Nephrite Jade Burial Amulet. Ming Dynasty Ref. OR49
Maker: Chinese
Date: Ming Dynasty 1368-1644
History: Neither nephrite nor jadeite are found in China proper. Nephrite, the mineral worked since the prehistoric age, came from the rivers and mountains of Turkestan and Siberia. Jadeite was not used in China until the 18th century when it was imported from Burma. Because of its hardness Nephrite could not be worked by metal. Instead, sand (possibly with grease) was used as an abrasive together with bamboo slivers as a grinding tool.
Photos of this amulet were sent to Professor Cheng for verification of the age. Please read A comprehensive handbook of Chinese archaic-jades (exoticjades.com) Yung-fu Cheng Ph.D. Professor and President JinWen University of Science & Technology. See email above in photos supplied.

Jade was supposed to have the properties of preserving the body from decay. The dog was for protection.
Condition: Nephrite weathers when underground and the amulet shows typical signs of this. The surface shows some decay in the Nephrite. Guaranteed genuine Nephrite (I am a qualified Gemmologist).
