Ardmore: The Story
In the words of Ardmore founder, Fée Halsted true Art has to have craftmanship. The Ardmore studio is home to over 70 African artists each are dedicated to their craft, producing ceramic works that are recognised around the world as modern-day collectables. Ardmore Design has become world renown, working in collaboration with French fashion house Hermes to British wallpaper brand Cole & Son.
The Ardmore story began in 1985 when Fée moved to a remote farm in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains and began teaching local people how to model and paint pottery. Originally working with Bonnie Ntshalintshali, the daughter of the farms housekeeper, they quickly developed a creative synergy. Bonnie along with other Ardmore Artists sadly passed away in 1999. A few years later, Fée moved the Ardmore studio to the picturesque Caversham Valley, erecting the Bonnie Ntshalintshali Museum in her honour and creating a unique home for the Ardmore family
Ardmore ceramic art is often given as state gifts to visiting leaders and luminaries to South Africa. Queen Elizabeth II was presented with an Ardmore bowl by the President of South Africa and there is an Ardmore masterpiece in the White House. Collectors have been seduced by the wit and whimsy of Ardmore designs and they particularly value the fact that each piece is unique.
At Ardmore, we are conscious that a degree of exclusivity is important to our customers, which is why each of our ceramic pieces is either unique or produced as part of a strictly limited run.
Today Ardmore is a serious business, however, one founding principle remains, each Ardmore artist is encouraged to foster their own individual style. Instead of the Ardmore workforce, they are known as the Ardmore Artists.
We understand that Ardmore collectors do not define luxury by price alone, but rather by the way that each Ardmore piece makes them feel. Its all about each persons individual aesthetic, and their response to fine materials and masterful artistry.
The story of the people behind each piece is critical to their appreciation of the finished product.
