The story of Alexander the Great's conquest of the Persian Empire. The title "Anabasis" means "the ascent" or "the march up", while "Alexandri" refers to Alexander himself. Books I-IV were written by Arrian of Nicomedia, a Greek historian of the 2nd century AD, and cover the period from Alexander's accession to the throne in 336BC to his victory over the Persian King Darius III at the Battle of Issus in 333BC. The first book of this set describes Alexander's early life and rise to power, and his invasion of Asia Minor and his victories at the battles of Granicus and Issus. The second book covers the Siege of Tyre and Alexander's conquest of Egypt, his march to Mesopotamia and his victory at the Battle of Guagamela.
