Art Nouveau copper-plated Pewter 'Frog" inkwell Circa 1880 -1914
The Art Nouveau style appeared in the early 1880s and was gone by the eve of the First World War. For a brief, brilliant moment, Art Nouveau was a shimmering presence in urban centers throughout Europe and North America. It was the style of the age--seen on public buildings and advertisements, inside private homes and outsidestreet cafés--adorning the life of the city.
Art Nouveau was a response to the radical changes caused by the rapid urban growth and technological advances that followed the Industrial Revolution. This timeline establishes a counterpoint between major moments in the development of Art Nouveau and world events to provide a context for understanding the style's many and varied influences.
Although I cannot find the maker's name nor any information which could help to accurately date the inkwell, but, taking into consideration the style, it definitely appears to be within the Art Nouveau period. My apologies if I am wrong.
The 'Frog" has been cast in pewter and then plated with copper, resulting in a rather pleasing effect. There is a very small patch on the base of the 'frog' and on the feel where the copper has been worn away. Wonder upon wonders, the glass inkwell and the brass insert are still intact - these articles are usually lost or broken. The hinge-pin, which would have been made from pewter, ( pewter, being a relatively soft metal), has been replaced .
The 'frog' stands approximately 7.5cm high and is roughly 7cm wide.and 6cm in depth. A very handsome piece indeed!
This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
