Arthur H Firmin - Original Mid 20th Century Hand colored Photograph. Signed and titled.

STAMPED ON BACK OF FRAME : FIRMIN PHOTOGRAPHERS LTD (NAIROBI)

Unframed. Size of photograph: 19 x 24.5 cm.

From http://www.sulisfineart.com/arthur-h-firmin-mid-20th-century-photograph-ruwenzori.html:

Arthur Firmin was born in 1912 in Kenya. He was the most distinguished mountaineer and professional photographer in East Africa. After an education in England, he returned in 1937 and joined the Kenya Police Force, in which he served throughout the war, acting as official photographer. He resigned in 1946 to set up his own business in Nairobi. Through exceptionally hard work, the highest professional standards and able assistance from his wife Kathleen (who was also a photographer) he was soon established a leading photographer in Nairobi and East Africa, with a wide and growing reputation in other countries such as England and America. Tragically Arthur Firmin died of pneumonia in 1957 after a fall in which he broke his leg during the Mountain Club of Kenya's failed attempt to climb Himal Chuli in the Himalayas. He is remembered today on Mount Kenya by Firmin's Tower, a pillar of rock on the north face of Batian, one of the mountain's twin peaks, which he scaled in 1944.
