Arthur Mee explains in the preface that it has been twelve years since The Children's Encyclopedia "came into the world" (first published in magazine form 19081910 and as a bound set in 1910). This set was created as a companion to that earlier work, aimed at slightly older children. It was intended to "tell more fully here the story of those things that encyclopedias can only touch upon."
