How to Enjoy the Great Outdoors with Kids in Tow

Is it your first time camping with the kids? Do not fear, help is near. It may sound like a very daunting and scary decision at first glance, but if you are prepared and organised, it should be smooth sailing. Make use of the easy and highly practical tips below for taking your first camping trip with the kids.

1. Planning is key

Make sure you book your camping spot in advance, especially if you want to go during peak season. You definitely would not want to arrive expecting an open spot only to be disappointed and, even wore, disappoint the kids. Planning ahead also extends to packing your food and camping gear. Make sure you have everything you need for a fun and comfortable camping trip. This is especially important if you are camping in an area where shops are scarce and hard to find.

Tip! If you are trembling at the thought of taking the kids along, why not have a test run by suggesting a camping trip in the backyard first.

2. Camping gear suggestions

If you are not sure about how your family or kids will react to the camping experience, perhaps rent a tent or better yet borrow one from a friend for your first camping trip. This is a great way to see if your kids really do enjoy camping before you go and buy all that gear, only to find out that no one enjoys it.

3. Packing 101

When it comes to packing, make sure you and your kids pack the bare necessities. Ensure that you include clothing for all situations and possible weather changes. That includes summer clothes, warmer clothes for cool evenings and possible extreme cold weather. Most importantly, don’t forget your raincoat!

Tip! If you look at a piece of clothing and think that you might need it - you won’t! Don’t over-pack. Leave all your fancy tablets and gadgets at home. If you want to bring a camera along, keep it in your car along with your smartphones and only fetch it when you plan to use it.

4. Stick to your normal routine

When camping or traveling with kids in general, you need to ensure that you stick to your normal routines. If your kids are used to going to sleep at 8 pm, make sure those routines remain constant even while camping. Make sure that you reach your camping site while it is still light out. Setting up camp in the dark is not only dangerous with kids around, but it will also put a damper right at the start of your holiday, so it’s simple: be organised.

5. Items you don’t want to forget at home

A pair of scissors will come in handy for more things than you think. Great for opening food packaging, cutting food items like meat or certain vegetables, it also serve as a great tool for cutting rope, etc.

A torch or some type of lighting source must be  safe and easy to use. Paraffin lights or candles may be very dangerous around children. Rather use your standard chargeable or solar powered torch or light.

Heavy duty garbage bags will come in handy, more than you might think. Make sure you have a roll handy when embarking on your camping trip.

Wet wipes are vital, especially if your camping site is far from running water. Sunscreen and insect repellant are other important things to take along. And of course, a first aid kit is vital in case of any injuries or cuts.

Toys are also a great thing to bring along if there aren’t any play areas or interesting attractions near your camping site such as beaches, lakes or dams. Bring some games, reading books and other forms of entertainment you kids might enjoy. Also encourage games that involve the outdoors.

6. Easy to make, kid friendly meals

Make sure you bring all your kids’ favourite meals and treats. Easy and simple cooking is the way to go. Don’t forget water bottles, especially if you decide to go on a hike. Bring along some snacks as well!
