The Living Space that is Just Right

There is a lot going for reptiles as pets. They are not very demanding; they do not suffer from behaviour disorders; most of them are silent pets; and as a rule they not cause allergies. All in all, reptiles fit perfectly into modern lifestyles, being easier to care for than traditional pets.

Still, some care is needed. It is important to provide the correct enclosure for your pet lizard, snake, or turtle.

Specific requirements vary from species to species. Some reptiles need to climb up vertical branches; others prefer flat surfaces with hiding spaces. Some like to burrow, while others spend lots of time in water. It is up to you to provide an ideal environment for your reptile, so that it is healthy and happy.

In general, all reptiles need escape-proof enclosures with enough space for movement. Your reptile pet must also have controlled temperature and humidity as well as proper types and amounts of lighting. Do not be surprised if you spend considerably more on the reptile enclosure and equipment than you do on the animal!

In the Bob Shop reptile section, you will find a variety of thermometers, hydrometers, lamps, as well as a range of terrariums and faunariums.

Terrariums are waterproof boxes made out of glass and can be used for terrestrial, arboreal and semi-aquatic species of reptiles. Tall terrariums are suitable for reptiles that like to climb, while land-dwelling reptiles feel most at home in longer terrariums which provide more surface area to roam. Aquatic reptiles such as turtles require some pool areas in the terrarium for the occasional swim.

A glass terrarium will look good in any home, but care must be taken to protect the glass from breaking!

Faunariums are a more affordable pet reptile enclosure. They are made of plastic and are perfect for housing lizards and baby snakes. They are light and easy to move around’ and they will not break if dropped. Being stackable, faunariums also allow you to keep all your small or baby reptiles in one convenient location.
Both glass and plastic enclosures provide good visibility and are easy to maintain, and the question of which one to acquire depends on your budget, the space available, and – most importantly – on the needs of your reptile pet.

Whichever enclosure you opt for, it is necessary to clean it regularly and to wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
