Harold Rosenberg was once considered America's most interesting and controversial writer on art. In Artworks and Packages Rosenberg clarifies the mysteries and conflicts of contemporary painting, sculpture, Happenings, kinetics, etc. and illuminates their relevance for the era of its publication, namely the late 1960s and early 1970s. He defines the thin line dividing art from the products of commercial design by analysing the anti-art tendency and the effort of minimal art that featured prominently in art narratives during this era. The 117 illustrations selected by the author constitute a gallery of the works examined in this text. More than 100 artists are represented.
