The arum lily, Zantedeschia aethiopica, is a lush perennial plant native to the wetter regions of South Africa. It naturally occurs along streams, marshes, and damp grasslands, where it thrives in moist soils and mild climates. Despite its common name, it is not a true lily, but a member of the arum family.
This species is admired for its elegant white spathes, which surround a central yellow flower spike known as a spadix. The flowers rise above dense clumps of large, glossy green leaves that are arrow-shaped and attractive even when the plant is not in bloom. Flowering typically occurs from winter into spring, although in favourable conditions it may bloom over a longer period.
Zantedeschia aethiopica is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant and is especially popular near ponds, water features, and shaded garden areas. Its flowers are frequently used in floral arrangements due to their clean, sculptural appearance and long vase life. In natural settings, the plant also provides shelter for small animals and attracts pollinating insects.
Growing Zantedeschia aethiopica is relatively easy in moist, fertile soil with full sun to partial shade. It prefers regular watering and performs particularly well in damp conditions, unlike many ornamental plants. While it can tolerate short dry periods once established, prolonged drought may reduce flowering and foliage quality. It can handle light frost but may die back in colder conditions before resprouting when temperatures warm again. With adequate moisture and minimal care, it forms vigorous clumps and produces abundant flowers year after year.
