First Edition, Tafelberg, 1997, Medium-format paperback  -  SA Fiction - 100pp. ISBN 9780624035879.

Not long after the early Dutch settlers arrived in the Cape of Good Hope, the Devil saw the need for a new branch of Hell.

THIS IS YOUR BIG CHANCE, ASMODEUS, he told the quaking junior devil who grovelled before his throne. THE CAPE OF STORMS HAS NEED OF OUR SERVICES. THERE ALREADY SEEM TO BE ENOUGH SINNERS IN THE CAPE TO JUSTIFY THE RUNNING COSTS. YOU WILL HAVE TO GO DOWN THERE AND SET UP A REGIONAL OFFICE.

But although Asmodeus is a very willing young demon, and although he acts with only the very worst intentions, the Cape sinners are a tough, wily, devious lot, and he lands up with far more than he bargained for. He has more than enough schemes to keep the fiery pits burning and the sulphur vats bubbling over, but if only the sinners would be just a little more cooperative.

Alex DAngelo was born in London in 1966 and brought up in the Cape. He did an MA in medieval literature at UCT, reading Old Norse and Old and Middle English, and therefore felt doomed to penury and starvation. He completed an Honours degree in librarianship in an effort to avoid this fate. He has worked, sometimes simultaneously, as librarian, line-sub, coppersmith and cartomancer. He now runs a slide library at UCT, is married with one daughter and can swear fluently in Old Icelandic.

Complete with Tony Grogans wonderful illustrations, the adven-tures of Asmodeus make up an ideal gift book for young and old and anyone who has ever had a good time in the Cape.
