Awards and Reviews: The book won the 2002 Lambda Literary Award in the Gay Men's Fiction category and the 2002 Ferro-Grumley Literary Award. It was also nominated for the 2003 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. *Entertainment Weekly* praised it as "a work of wild, vaulting ambition and achievement". Critics have frequently compared Jamie O'Neill to Irish literary greats such as James Joyce, Flann O'Brien, and Samuel Beckett.
