Aumy - Ration Crate WW2

I have been told that this is a WW2 Ration crate from England. The Source seemed sound. 

Unfortunately the markings, which were painted on the crate, can no longer be read as they were painted over sometime in the past. The crate seemed to have a green cross painted on it, which I think was painted on when the crate was made. Possibly someone can help with some more information on this Item……..Many Thanks
