549 pages, assumed first edition, published 1900 by Gustav Fischer, Jena. Half-leather with gilt titling and decorations to the spine, that is fraying at the ends, with various scratches and scrapes to the boards, especially a larger one to the front. Gothic script. Pen ownership details dated 1901 to first endpaper, that also contains the stamp of Mineralogisk Museums Bibliotek, with another such stamp appearing on the title page. Two maps, one of Kerguelen bound in opposite page 233, the other being a fold-out map of world ocean water depths, intact at the end of the book.

Carl Chun was a German biologist and oceanographer who led the German deep-sea expedition of 1898-1899. He is known for his pioneering work in oceanography, especially in the study of deep-sea animals and their habitats. Chun was one of the first scientists to use photographic techniques to document deep-sea life, and he made many important discoveries during his expedition, including the first photographs of a living giant squid.
