Offered for sale is an unusual and hard to find stoneware studio vase made by an indigenous Australian Aboriginal art potter ; the style of the vase is typical of the work of the brothers Carroll and Derek Thompson who work from a craft centre in the remote North Western part of Southern Australia . This is a hand thrown stoneware vase with a striking etched/sgrafitto motif of a mythological reptile /lizard , an iconic and recurring motif in the complex Dreamtime Story narratives of indigenous Australian Aboriginal people. The image features in creation myths of Aboriginals which typically narrate the inter-relatedness of Humans , animals and the natural environment and the transcendence and shape-shifting of the soul. The vase is made from a buff coloured off white/chamois coloured stoneware with delicate accents of colour viz ochre and slate grey/blue added to enhance the etched motif of the lizard with an extraordinarily long tail which wraps around the circumference of the vase. The lizard motif is pictured from above as an aerial viewpoint in a highly stylized and flattened design typical of Aboriginal art.
