This huge coin, weighing 24 grams, was minted in .9000 silver at Kremnitz, Hungary under the rule of the Emperor Franz Joseph I of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. It catalogues at over R200.00 in VF and R400.00 in EF.

Franz Joseph died in the Schonburg Palace in 1916, aged 86, in the middle of the First World War. Ironically, he is said, ironically, to have died singing “Gott erhalte, Gott beschutze, Unsern Kaiser” ("God Save the Emperor"). His 68-year reign is the third-longest in the recorded history of Europe.
