It is a slow-growing, narrowly conical evergreen tree which grows from 10-24 m in height, with scale-like foliage arranged in decussate pairs. The leaves are unequal in size, with pairs of larger (4-8 mm) leaves alternating with pairs of smaller (2-3 mm) leaves, giving a flattened shoot. Each leaf has a prominent white stomatal stripe along the outer edge. The cones are 5-10 mm long, with four scales, two very small sterile basal scales and two large fertile scales; each fertile scale has two winged seeds 3-4 mm long. With habitat loss, logging and disease over the last century austrocedrus chilensis is under pressure in the wild. It has been introduced into cultivation in Europe and the American north-west. It has good ornamental capacity and produces highly valued timber, frequently used in construction. This species tolerates low temperatures (-8¿ C) and can tolerate occasional snow cover for up to a couple of weeks per year. It is relatively easy to cultivate although germination from seed is normally low, about 30%. As an alpine species seed requires cold stratification for 60 to 90 days.It is best in a full sun position and can take a range of poor degraded soils with good drainage.
