You are bidding on one authentic German helmet from just after WW2. These helmets were issued to the post-war German Border Police units, and were modeled on the war-time M40 helmets as used by the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS.
The main differences between the BGS helmets and the war-time M40 helmets are as follows:
- The BGS helmet did not have ventilation holes punched into the sides (holes usually seen above the ear area).
- The BGS helmet uses a suspension system connected to a single screw in the dome of the helmet; the M40 uses a three-point attachment system consisting of split pins (flat pin heads usually seen on outside of helmet dome, just above flaring of skirt).
This particular helmet has had the original BGS foam-padded metal liner replaced with a leather liner modeled on that of the M40. It will fit a 58-59 cm head with ease. The chin strap is leather, and worn with age (some cracking present). Given that the helmet is more than 60 years old, this is to be expected.
This helmet can form a perfect base for converting to a replica of a war-time helmet.
