AVE MARIA BACHGOUNOD (Key: D Major)

English words by Henry F. Chorley
Published by Edwin Ashdown Limited

Condition: Good, vintage condition considering age. The outer cover shows edge wear, some creasing and surface handling marks, typical of older performance copies. Interior pages remain clear, fully legible, and sit flat. No obscuring annotations.

About the Piece

This is the well-loved Ave Maria by Charles Gounod, famously composed as an inspired melodic layer placed over the first prelude from J. S. Bachs Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I*. It remains one of the most enduring sacred pieces in Western music sung in churches, recital halls, ceremonies, weddings and memorials across the world.

The key offered here is D major (labelled No. 1 in D major: A to F). This key is among the most practical for both voice and accompaniment, with a comfortable tessitura for many amateur and semi-professional vocalists.

Gounods treatment retains Bachs flowing arpeggiated texture almost entirely intact, making it a beautiful meeting point between the Baroque and the 19th-century Romantic style a timeless favourite for singers.

About the Edition

This edition by Edwin Ashdown Limited is one of the earlier standard performance prints widely circulated before modern re-engraved versions became common.
Features include:

  • Clear, uncluttered engraving typical of mid-20th-century British publishers.

  • English text underlay by Henry F. Chorley, faithful to the well-known translation.

  • Simple layout for accompanists who prefer Bachs original pattern without editorial alteration.

A classic studio or church copy.
