The four-engined Avro Lancaster was without a doubt the most famous of all RAF heavy bombers of WWII. From 1942 it formed the backbone of the night bomber offensives deep in Germany and became famous for sinking the Tirpitz and destroying the Möhne and Eder dams. The Lancaster was capable of carrying bomb loads of up to 9,980 kg, the heaviest single bomb being the Grand Slam. It served in 68 RAF Bomber Command squadrons until 1945 and flew more than 156,000 sorties. Of a total of 7,300 machines produced, almost half were lost during these operations. Only two airworthy examples survive today, one in the UK and one in Canada.
