THIS PARTICULAR STONE WAS BOUGHT INN 2011 FROM A SELLER IN CAPE TOWN WITH THE ORIGEN OF THE STONE INDICATED AS BRAZIL. IT HAS A VVS (EYE CLEAR) CLARITY WHICH MEANS IT IS FREE OF INCLUSIONS AS SEEN WITH THE NAKED EYE WHICH IT APPEARS TO BE. IT WAS ALSO SOLD AS A NATURAL UNTREATED MADEIRA CITRINE GEMSTONE. HOWEVER AS WILL BE EXPLAINED BELOW I THINK IT IS A HEAT TREATED CITRINE GEMSTONE AND QUIT POSSIBLY EITHER A HEAT TREATED TOPAZ OR SAPPHIRE GEMSTONE AS INDICATED BY THE ORANGE UV AFFECT SEEN (PLEASE SEE PHOTO). THESE STONES TOGETHER WITH SCAPOLITE ARE SOMETIMES MISTAKEN FOR CITRINE AND SOLD AS CITRINE. SINCE BRAZIL IS ALSO A MAJOR SUPPLIER OF TOPAZ BUT NOT OF SAPPHIRE IF THIS STONE IS INDEED MISIDENTIFIED IT WOULD PROPABLY BE A HEAT TREATED TOPAZ.
TESTS PERFORMED: SCRATCH TEST: IT DID SCRATCH A GLASS WINDOW PANE WHICH WOULD INDICATE IT IS HARDER THAN GLASS. (MOHS HARDNESS CITRINE 7.0-7.5 GLASS 5.5-6.5 TOPAZ 8.0 SAPPHIRE 9.0)UV LIGHT TEST: ORANGE REACTION WHICH WAS UNEXSPECTED. (THE UV LIGHT HIT THE ELECTRONS. THEY JUMP AND FALL BACK. THEY RADIATE LIGHT OF A CERTAIN WAVELENGTH WHEN THEY DO WHICH IS SPECIFIC TO EACH ELEMENT IN THE MINERAL. THIS IS CALLED FLUORESCENCE.) ONLY 10% OF GEMSTONES EXHIBIT A FLUORESCENCE AFFECT LIKE RUBIES, SAPPHIRE, TOPAZ, OPALS AND DIAMONDS. GLASS AND ALL NATURAL QUARTZ VARIETIES INCLUDING CITRINE DOES NOT SHOW A UV AFFECT. LAB GROWN CITRINE UVS BLUE LIGHT. YELLOW TOPAZ HOWEVER SHOWS A YELLOW TO ORANGE REACTION UNDER UV LIGHT. (Topaz is often treated with heat or irradiation to make it a deep blue, reddish-orange, pink etc) YELLOW TO ORANGE SAPPHIRES NATURAL (HEAT TREATED OR UNTREATED) ALSO FLUORESCE ORANGE WHILE SYNTHETIC ORANGE SAPPHIRES FLUORENSCE RED. ALMOST 99.9% OF ORANGE SAPPHIRES ARE HEAT TREATED. SCAPOLITE FLUORESCES RED UNDER UV.
