The design is inspired by the famous Aztec Sun Stone, often referred to as the Aztec Calendar, one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in Mexico. The original stone was carved during the reign of the Aztec emperor Moctezuma II in the early 1500s and was rediscovered beneath Mexico Citys central square in 1790.
Although commonly called the Aztec Calendar, historians believe the stone was much more than a calendar. It symbolized the Aztecs understanding of time, astronomy, the universe, and the continuous cycle of life. At its center is the face of the Sun God Tonatiuh, surrounded by symbols representing the previous ages of the world, the cardinal directions, and the sacred 20-day calendar.
