This book plots the time when Michael Edwardes joined British Leyland at what now seems like the height of never - never land. With decision making in the hands of politicians and shop stewards Edwardes and his team embark on a tempestuous journey to right the company's ills. No mean feat. One thing that this book does point out is that Edwardes always had the "final solution" of closing down the company, for if he and his board were to go the government would never find such high caliber management again. Slowly, slowly Edwardes and his fellow management, together with some senior union officials and not to forget a large portion of the shop floor start to turn the company around. Closing ludicrously overmanned factories making bad cars that nobody wanted, building new state of the art car plants that turned out winners such as the Mini Metro. This book takes you along a whirlwind path and Edwardes pulls no punches, naming names all the way. The British are probably world class in self degeneration, the company was never going to be rescued by one man alone, it needed the whole country to come behind it, government, opposition, the media (yes the media!!), unions, customers, the whole nation. This is a fantastic book that tells it like it was
