Published: Cape Town, Howard Timmins and George Allen and Unwin, 1949

Signed and inscribed to Rowland Hill by the illustrator Stella Bailey and dated 1.11. 1949. All on front free endpaper along with an interesting newspaper article on Stella Bailey tipped in on the same page. All 12 of her full page raised colour plate illustrations are present,  one with the tissue paper cover removed  but illustration is still fully present with a closed tear on the blank border, not on the plate.  Edges slightly foxed but condition else very good. Illustrated dust jacket is complete and not price clipped but has evidence of tape repair on reverse. Stella Mary Bailey ( nee Chiappini ) was a painter. She married Sir John Milner Bailey, son of Sir Abe Bailey. She was widowed a year later in 1946. Her portrait was painted by her friend Irma Stern ( see above ). Bookplate of David van Breda Smith.  The illustrations of this groundbreaking book of Xhosa legends were painted by Stella Bailey during her wanderings around South Africa.
