Gertrude Bacon (1874 - 1949) was an aeronautical pioneer. Her writing popularized aeronautics - this was her first work and she had three further volumes on the topic, and in doing so she paved the way for more women to become involved with popular and commercial flying. Bacon herself held many firsts in the world of aeronautics: she was the first woman in England to make a proper balloon ascent, the first woman to fly in a seaplane, and the first woman to fly an airship - among other feats.
