The Balvenie Triple Cask 25 Year Old Batch No. 1
The Distillery
The Balvenie Distillery was established in 1892 in Dufftown, Banffshire, in the heart of Speyside, Scotland. It remains one of the few distilleries in the world that still grows its own barley, operates its own traditional floor maltings, employs its own coopers to tend the casks, and has a coppersmith to maintain the stills. It has been owned and operated by the same independent family company William Grant & Sons for five consecutive generations, making it one of the most hands-on and traditional distilleries in Scotland.
The Malt Master
This expression was created and personally selected by David C. Stewart MBE, who joined The Balvenie in 1962 and became one of the longest-serving and most respected Malt Masters in Scotch whisky history. Every cask that went into this bottle was assessed and selected by Stewart himself a level of human craftsmanship that is increasingly rare in modern whisky production.
The Triple Cask Process
The Triple Cask concept was developed by Stewart to layer complexity through three distinct cask types, each contributing its own character to the final whisky:
🛢 Oloroso Sherry Butt imparts dried fruits, rich sweetness, dark spice and depth
🛢 First Fill Bourbon Barrel contributes vanilla, honey, caramel and warmth
🛢 Traditional Whisky Cask provides structure, gentle oak and integration
After 25 years of maturation across these three cask types, the whiskies were brought together and allowed to marry in a vatting tun for a further six months before bottling a final step that allows the individual characters to fully integrate into a unified, cohesive whisky.
The Release
The Balvenie Triple Cask 25 Year Old was launched in spring 2013 exclusively through Travel Retail airport duty-free and select travel retail outlets globally. It was never available through standard retail channels. This was a deliberate and significant distribution decision limiting access to one of the most exclusive and age-forward expressions Balvenie had ever produced.
Batch No. 1
This bottle is Batch No. 1 confirmed on both the bottle label and the original presentation box. Batch No. 1 represents the very first production run of this expression. It was the batch that introduced this whisky to the world, the batch personally overseen from inception by David C. Stewart, and the batch that established what this whisky was and what it stood for. No whisky carrying this designation will ever be produced again.
The Expression Today
The Balvenie Triple Cask 25 Year Old is now discontinued and no longer in production. What exists in the secondary market is the entirety of what will ever exist. Bottle and original luxury presentation box are fully intact and in excellent condition.
