Barley is a versatile and hardy grain known for its nutritional benefits and wide range of uses. This ancient cereal crop is perfect for home gardeners interested in growing their own grains for food, brewing, or animal feed.
Unique Qualities:
Growing Season: Barley thrives when planted in early spring or late summer, preferring well-drained soil and full sun. It can tolerate a range of soil types and is relatively drought-resistant once established.
Time to Harvest: Expect to harvest your Barley approximately 90-110 days after planting. The grains are ready when the seed heads turn golden brown and the plants begin to dry out. Cut the stalks and allow them to dry further before threshing to collect the grains
Sow at a rate of 120 seeds (plants) per square meter. Thus this this packet only provides enough seed for 2m2. Ideally 8 to 12 hours of sunlight
Max yield of 700 grams per square meter (commercial average in South africa is 600 grams per square meter) . Unlikely to be achieved in the home garden but collected seed can be resown the next season, should be sufficient for sowing 160m2 if you get at least 400 grams per square meter, ie 800 grams from the full 2m2 of the first year. Worth the try as barley is a very low maintenance plant
Besides for grain, it can be grown as forage and for the birds/wildlife
