'Batonga Styled Buffalo Stool"
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ITEM IS AVAILABLE FOR COLLECTION DIRECTLY FROM OUR GALLERY ONLY
This delightfully primitive hand carved Batonga stool, featuring the image of a Buffalo is as decorative as it is useful.
'Tonga' or 'Batonga' stools still being used in rural African villages. These particular stools are named after the Tonga people who originated in South Africa and overtime migrated north. Nowadays, this people group is referred to as “Tsonga” in South Africa, in Zimabawe – “Tonga”, and in Malawi and Zambia – “Batonga”.
Traditionally, only the head of the household could own and take his place on a Tonga stool – women were prohibited from sitting on stools. These chairs are surprisingly comfortable, used for rest, work and during traditional meetings.
Each stool is made from one solid piece of wood – usually a hardwood like teak or ironwood to ensure longevity. Tonga stools are African heirlooms, passed down from generation to generation.
Although we cannot be sure of its origin or age, it was most likely carved in Zambia or Zimbabwe and does have signs of age and wear hinting that it is an older piece. The seat is worn down to a smooth finish.
A really attractive piece of African workmanship , the stool also makes a very decorative stand for other artworks and carvings or is stunning just the way it is as a standalone piece.
Primitive, decorative and interesting, it would add a touch of African tradition to a modern designer home. A delightful find!
