My electric gate does not run on mains and is entirely dependent on the solar panel to keep the battery charged. In order to monitor the system, I fitted a panel voltmeter (permanently) to the gate control box. Now I can easily see the state of charge during the day and also at night. It draws so little current that it is perfect to have it on 24/7 without draining the battery.
