Battlefield 3 marked a major step forward for the series, combining a cinematic single-player campaign with the large-scale multiplayer warfare that had become the franchise's defining feature. On PS3, the game delivers impressive visuals, destructive environments, vehicles, and large multiplayer battles, although the console version is more limited than the PC experience.
Battlefield 3 focuses heavily on realistic-feeling gunplay, large environments, and combined-arms combat. Weapons have substantial recoil and sound powerful, while different weapon attachments allow players to customize their loadouts.
The single-player campaign follows U.S. Marine Sergeant Henry Blackburn and other soldiers as they attempt to stop a terrorist threat. Missions move between different locations and provide a mixture of infantry combat, vehicle sections and scripted set pieces.
The multiplayer component is where Battlefield 3 truly shines. Multiple classes encourage different roles, including Assault, Engineer, Support and Recon. Teamwork is important, with players able to revive teammates, repair vehicles, provide ammunition, or engage enemies from long range.
Vehicles are another major part of the experience. Tanks, helicopters, jets, armoured vehicles and other equipment can dramatically change the flow of a battle.
Strengths
Excellent gunplay
Strong class-based gameplay
Excellent vehicle combat
Destructible environments
Strong emphasis on teamwork
Large-scale multiplayer battles
Weaknesses
Single-player campaign is relatively short
Some campaign sections feel heavily scripted
Vehicle controls can take time to master
Multiplayer can be unforgiving for inexperienced players
The multiplayer experience is the heart of Battlefield 3. The PS3 version supports large battles and a variety of modes, with Conquest being the standout mode.
Conquest revolves around capturing and holding strategic objectives while reducing the opposing team's ticket count. This creates battles that constantly shift between infantry engagements, vehicle attacks and defensive positions.
Rush provides a more structured experience, with one team attacking objectives while the other attempts to defend them.
The maps are designed to accommodate different play styles. Urban environments create intense infantry battles, while larger maps provide room for tanks and aircraft.
The destruction system adds another tactical element. Walls can be damaged or destroyed, allowing players to create new lines of sight or eliminate defensive positions.
The campaign follows several characters as they respond to an international terrorist threat involving the United States, Iran and Russia.
It attempts to deliver a cinematic military-thriller experience, with frequent changes of location and large-scale set pieces. The narrative provides some memorable moments, although it relies heavily on familiar military-shooter conventions.
The campaign is best viewed as an introduction to the game's mechanics rather than the main reason to own Battlefield 3. The multiplayer is considerably more substantial.
For a PS3 game released in 2011, Battlefield 3 is visually impressive. DICE's Frostbite 2 engine produces detailed environments, convincing lighting and impressive destruction.
Character animations and weapon models are also well presented, while explosions and environmental effects contribute to the game's cinematic atmosphere.
The PS3 version naturally has compromises compared with the PC version, particularly in terms of resolution, player count and visual detail. There can also be occasional texture pop-in and performance drops during particularly busy moments.
Nevertheless, the overall presentation remains impressive.
Strengths
Impressive lighting and environments
Excellent destruction effects
Detailed weapons and vehicles
Strong visual effects
Cinematic presentation
Weaknesses
PS3 version is technically limited compared with PC
Occasional performance dips
Some texture and environmental pop-in
Lower player counts than the PC version
Sound is one of Battlefield 3's biggest strengths.
Weapons sound powerful and distinct, while explosions, vehicles and environmental effects create a convincing sense of being in the middle of a battlefield. Aircraft and tanks are particularly impressive from an audio perspective.
The soundtrack supports the cinematic campaign without overwhelming the combat.
The game's audio design is especially effective in multiplayer, where distant gunfire, explosions and vehicles can provide useful information about what is happening around the player.
Excellent multiplayer
Outstanding sound design
Impressive destruction
Strong gunplay
Excellent vehicle warfare
Well-designed multiplayer maps
Deep class and weapon progression
Cinematic presentation
Short and fairly conventional campaign
PS3 version has technical limitations
Lower multiplayer player count than PC
Some maps can favour particular play styles
Multiplayer learning curve can be steep
Occasional performance issues
Battlefield 3 remains an excellent example of large-scale military multiplayer design. Its combination of infantry combat, vehicles, destruction, class-based teamwork and expansive maps gives it a distinctive identity compared with more straightforward military shooters. The sound design and Frostbite-powered destruction also make the battlefield feel unusually dynamic.
The PS3 version makes some compromises compared with the PC release, and the single-player campaign is considerably less impressive than the multiplayer. However, the core multiplayer experience is extremely strong, with enough progression, classes, vehicles and map variety to provide substantial replay value.
Score: 9/10
