TO PLAY THE 1990 VERSION OF BATTLESHIP: Unfold the clamshell game board so each player can see their two grids: the bottom ocean grid for placing ships and the top targeting grid for tracking shots. Raise the lid to hide each player's ocean grid from their opponent.
Each player secretly places their five ships on their ocean grid. Ships can be placed horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally. Ships cannot overlap or go off the grid. The standard ships are:1 Aircraft Carrier (5 spaces), 1 Battleship (4 spaces), 1 Destroyer (3 spaces), 1 Submarine (3 spaces), 1 Patrol Boat (2 spaces)
Players decide who goes first. On a turn, a player calls out a coordinate (e.g., "B5") to fire a shot.
If the shot hits a ship the opponent says "Hit!" and the firing player places a red peg on their targeting grid at that coordinate. The defending player also marks the hit on their ocean grid. If the shotmisses the opponent says "Miss!" The firing player places a white peg on their targeting grid at that coordinate.
When all the spaces occupied by a ship are hit, the ship is "sunk".The first player to sink all five of their opponent's ships wins the game
