PETER RABBIT IS OVER 120 YEARS OLD! MOST READERS OF THIS REVIEW (REGARDLESS OF THEIR AGE) WILL HAVE ENCOUNTERED PETER RABBIT EARLY IN THEIR CHILDHOOD. ORIGINALLY WRITTEN IN THE FORM OF A LETTER TO A YOUNG INVALID CHILD FRIEND OF AUTHOR BEATRIX POTTER IN 1893, THE STORY WAS FIRST PUBLISHED PRIVATELY BY POTTER IN 1900.
For the 1902 Frederick Warne publishers edition, the text was shortened considerably and some of the illustrations changed; this is the Peter Rabbit book that we know today. By November 1903, almost 60,000 copies had been sold, and Peters story became a children's classic throughout the world. Other animal characters was created by Beatrix which include, Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Her tales are illustrated by her own hand in delicate and detailed watercolor pictures depicting her characters.
WHAT IS MOST ASTONISHING IS HOW LITTLE HER 23 SMALL BOOKS HAVE DATED. TODAYS CHILDREN COME TO THESE BOOKS AS THOUGH THEY HAD BEEN WRITTEN SPECIALLY FOR THEM, RATHER THAN AS VENERABLE CLASSICS. THE 23 TITLES OF THE 23 VOLUMES IN TIS LIBRARY ARE: The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, The Tailor of Gloucester, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of Two Bad Mice, The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, The Tale of Tom Kitten, The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, The Tale of Flopsy Bunnies, The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse, The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes, The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse, The Tale of Mr. Tod, The Tela of Pigling Bland, The Tale of Samuel Whiskers, The Tale of The Pie and the Patty-Pan, The Tale of Ginger and Pickles, The Tale of Little Pig Robinson, The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit, The Story of Miss Moppett, Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes, Cicly Parsley's Nursery Rhymes.

BEATRIX POTTER (1866-1943): Helen Beatrix Potter was an English writer and illustrator. She is best known for her children's books featuring animals, such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which was her first commercially published work in 1902. In all 23 Peter Rabbit tales were written by Beatrix Potter. Around about 1907 she modelled some clay figures and contacted Royal Doultons Lambeth factory. However nothing came of this project. Some ten years later another attempt was made to produce the charming characters from her stories with Grimwades. Again unfortunately nothing came of it. The first Beatrix Potter pieces were made by the iconic Beswick factory in the late 1940's - and production of the figures continued at Beswick and in turn, Royal Albert for many decades. Sadly by this time however she had died.
PETER RABBIT: Peter Rabbit is a fictional animal character in various children's stories by English author Beatrix Potter. A mischievous, adventurous young rabbit who wears a blue jacket, he first appeared in The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902, and subsequently in five more books between 1904 and 1912. Peter, his widowed mother, Mrs. Rabbit, as well as his younger sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail (with Peter the eldest of the four little rabbits) live in a rabbit hole that has a human kitchen, human furniture, as well as a shop where Mrs. Rabbit sells various items.
