A BEAUTIFUL 1950S ROSENTHAL GERMANY MOLLERE 5-SIDED CANDY DISH. MEDIUM SIZE 19,5CM DIAMETER WITH EACH OF THE 5 CORNERS BEING PIERCED WITH 4 HOLES. HAS A 24 K GOLD RIM STILL IN VERY GOOD CONDITION AND AN DECORATIVE EMBOSSED (RAISED) GEOMETRIC PATTERN.
MARKINGS:
HAVE THE MID TO LATE 1950S GREEN UNDER GLAZE ROSENTHAL BACK STAMP IN WHICH THE WORD "ROSENTHAL" (WITHOUT THE E) APPEARS IN SCRIPT AND IS BISECTED BY CROSSED LINES WITH THE IMAGE OF A CROWN CENTERED BETWEEN THEM. THE WORD GERMANY" AND PATTERN NAME "MOLLERE" ARE PART OF THE BACK STAMP. UNDERNEATH ARE 3 DOTS AND THE LETTERS 3224 AND 58.
ROSENTHALE PORCELAIN:
Philipp Rosenthal started doing business in the porcelain industry in 1884 in Erkersreuth situated near Bavarian Selb. In the beginning he was buying Hutschenreuther whiteware. These items were then decorated by his wife Maria and sold door to door.
Until mid 1930s. Rosenthal overtook factories: Kronach (1897), Marktredwitz (with Thomas brand in 1908), Ziedler (1917), Selb (1939), Waldenburg (1936), Sophienthal (1936) and Waldershof (1936).
Philipp Rosenthal was a Jew. In the second half of 1934 situation in Germany was so tense that he lost control of his business. In 1935 he was forced to leave Germany and died in 1937.
The factory continued operations during the WWII under Nazi control but with intervention by Joseph Goebels amazingly continued to operate under the Jewish brand name Rosenthal. Philip Rosenthal, son of the founder, was fighting Nazi Germany. After the win he returned to Germany trying to regain control. He suceeded only in 1950.
Under Rosenthal junior management the company swiftly recovered. Philip hired the best artists such as Bjorn Wiinblad from Denmark, Hans Theo Baumann from Germany, Raymond Peynet from France and Tapio Wirkkala from Finland. In 1979 when the company was closing to the 100th anniversary, it had around 8500 workers.
In 1997 Waterford Wedgwood plc took control of Rosenthal. Part of the group became Hutschenreuther in 2000.
Financial problems of Waterford Wedgwood made that in 2009 Rosenthal was bought by Italian Sambonet. The company is now traded as Rosenthal GmbH.
CONDITION: NO CHIPS. NO CRACKS. EMBOSSED DECORATIONS AND GOLD GILDED RIM IN GOOD CONDITION. FOR A VINTAGE PLATE STILL IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.
