This auction is only for the lovely vintage ebony and brass 9 inch square in the pictures. The rest (and some more) may probably be sold at a later date as I’m in the process of trimming a collection.
No reserve, low starting price. This is an auction and has no Buy-it-now option.
The purpose of the square, amongst others, is to transfer right angles onto your work piece.
This is in great condition, a scarce and collectible tool. Measuring 230mm inside, 275mm top, 165mm handle. The blade has a small area of pitting on the inner edge near the stock but is otherwise very clean.
The wood is ebony (or very, very dark rosewood) with no cracks, splits or woodworm. Tiny chip to bottom of stock (see photos). Tight wood-metal fit with no play whatsoever. Will make an excellent user tool. I scribed a line, reversed the square, and it was just about 100% true.
Staining and slight pitting of the steel commensurate with its age (see photos) and a few dings to the wood, probably from being stored in a tool chest with other tools. This only adds to its beauty and character.
The square is marked by its London maker, Buck Whitechapel London. Buck was one of the more renowned tool makers from England. Faint previous owner stamped WORNHAM??.
For collectors’ purposes the item was not “over-cleaned”, with the square still retaining its desirable qualities that commeth with age and use. The Buyer is welcome to perform additional cleaning, should he require that.
Unfortunately no pick-up of items. I will combine shipments, if requested (auctions within a reasonable period), but this may cost more depending on weight.
Shipping will be R35 in South Africa. All items will be properly packed. I am not responsible for any damages by the post office that happens during transit.
Any more questions or remarks relating to the item being sold are more than welcome.
