A wonderful wood item out of an early Johannesburg home (Bellosgaurdo,1900, named for the hill outside Florence). The house (now owned by Adidas) is still there on the ridge across from Ellis Park Stadium. This towel rail was moved in 1912 to another location. Back then, it would have held a continuous band of towel (usually linen). You can get the same effect by stitching two dish towels together or it will fit a roll of paper towel instead. This type of fitting is where the paper towel dispenser originated. Both of the knobs have been chipped probably due to being dropped 100 years ago (with nice patina), please see the photos. The last photo shows the stamp of a Maltese cross that is on the back of both brackets (possibly the manufacturer).
We have sold on eBay UK for for 4yrs 3months under two identities i.e. woodendollars and scrambleduck.
