BEAUTIFUL BLOOD RED SPINEL
Spinel is a magnesium aluminate, coloured with chromium and iron. It is quite hard and it
forms a cubic crystal like diamond. Spinel occurs in octahedral crystals and unlike
diamond has a complete absence of cleavage. Due to its excellent dispersion, gem spinels
can possess vivid fire, and the intensity of colour is partially due to the fact that, unlike most gemstones, spinel is singly refractive. Spinel is usually formed as a contract metamorphic mineral in limestone. It is discovered
as rolled pebbles in sand and gravel pits. Spinel is mostly mined in Burma, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Tadjikistan.
Natural spinel is not well known in commercial jewellery world, since the supply is very
limited and jewellery industry does not market what it can't get. So it is mostly
collector's stone. The most sought after colours are red, hot pink and flame orange, though one of the main attraction of spinel is that it comes in the wide range of gorgeous colours.
