WE HAVE A BEAUTIFUL BULLMOUTH HELMET SHELL ON AUCTION. ALSO KNOWN AS CAMEO SHELLS THEY HAVE BEEN USED FOR CENTURIES IN THE MANUFACTURE OF CAMEOS WHICH WERE POPULAR IN VICTORIAN TIMES. IT IS CALLED A BULLMOUTH SINCE IT LOOKS LIKE A MOUTH AND ITS OUTER LIP HAS VERY STRONG TEETHLIKE PORTRUSIONS.
BULLMOUTH HELMET SEA SHELL:
The Bull-Mouth Helmet Snail (Cypraecassis rufa) is a large marine snail a gastropod mollusk in the Cassidae family. It is also called a Cameo Shell or Red Helmet shell.
The Bull-Mouth Helmet is a snail with its shell. The shell is shaped like a helmet. The shell is large, thick, and creamy-beige-coloured with a red-orange sheen. It is coiled with ridges (called varices) and bumps. The Bull-Mouth Helmet Snail can measure up to 17 centimetres long. It is found in the tropical and temperate oceans of southern Africa and east Africa, specifically on the Kenyan coast. It is usually buried in the sand at the bottom of the ocean.
The Bulmouth or Red Helmet shells are usually active at night and are almost never seen out during the day. They are now very rare. They have been used for centuries in the manufacture of cameos which were popular in Victorian times hence their other name Cameo Shell.
