COTTAGEWARE: Cottage ware is pottery that has been shaped and painted to resemble the classic thatched-roof cottages of the old English countryside. The artistic style is reminiscent of the 1930s to 1960s. It generally has a smooth, clear glazed finish, painted with natural rustic colors that would occur organically in nature. Often it is decorated with vines or other flora growing up the walls of the cottage. These little ceramic cottages are generally made of porcelain in England and as stamping pottery was already common practice by the time cottage ware came to be, it is rare to find an unmarked piece. Popular manufacturers include Kitsch, Price Bros. Ltd., Keele Street Pottery, Beswick, and Carlton.
