PINKISH RED 1.80CT COMPOSITE RUBY GEMSTONE WITH GISA CERTIFICATE NO 2 OF 4 ON AUCTION

ON AUCTION IS THE 2ND OF 4 COMPOSITE RUBIES THIS WEEK. THIS IS A 1.80CT (0,36G SEE PHOTO PLEASE MULTIPLY GRAM BY 5 TO GET CARATS) RED COMPOSITE RUBY GEMSTONE WITH ROUND CUT.

THIS PARTICULAR STONE WAS BOUGHT IN 2011 FROM AN ONLINE SELLER IN CHANTHABURI THAILAND. COUNTRY OF ORIGEN WAS INDICATED AS MOZAMBIQUE. IT WAS SOLD AS A NATURAL RUBY. HEAT TREATMENT WITH A LEAD GLASS FILLING WAS INDICATED. IT HAS A SI1 CLARITY (INCLUSIONS EYE VISIBLE) WHICH MEANS IT HAS INCLUSIONS THAT CAN BE SEEN WITH THE NAKED EYE.

TESTS PERFORMED:
UNCLEAR ELECTRON UV LIGHT EMISSION TEST: GIVES A VERY WEAK RED FLUORESCENCE UNDER UV LIGHT. NATURAL RUBIES USUALLY SHOW WEAK RED FLUORESCENCE. A SYNTHETIC RUBY USUALLY SHOWS A STRONG RED FLUORESCENCE.
PASSED THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY TEST: TESTED THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY WITH A MIZAR PRESTIGE SERIES 2 DIAMOND TESTER. IT MOVED UP THE LADDER FROM STANDARD LEVEL 3 TO LEVEL 6. FOR SAPPHIRES AND RUBIES A LEVEL OF 6 TO 7 IS THE NORM FOR THIS TESTER.

THIS RUBY GEMSTONE HAS A SUPPLIED GISA (GEMMOLOGY INSTITUTE OF SOUTHERN AFRICA) CERTIFICATE. THIS COMPANY COULD NOT BE CONTACTED BY CONTACT DETAILS SUPPLIED ON THE BACK. THERE IS NO WEBSITE TO CHECK PAST REPORTS THAT I COULD FIND. I DO NOT KNOW IF STILL IN EXISTENCE. TO THEIR CREDIT THOUGH I HAVE SEEN CERTIFICATES BY THEM THAT I COULD INDEPENDENTLY VERIFY AS CORRECT.

MY PERSONAL CONCLUSION REGARDING THIS GEMSTONE:
THIS RUBYS THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY IS HIGH AND PUT IT IN THE CONUNDRUM (MINERAL OF RUBY AND SAPPHIRE) RANGE. IT HAS A WEAK TO MODERATE UV FLUORESCENCE WHICH MOST PROPABLY INDICATES IT IS AT LEAST IN PART NATURAL RUBY. IT WAS SOLD AS A NATURAL HEAT TREATED RUBY WITH A LEAD GLASS FILLING IN 2011. (LEAD GLASS FILLINGS ARE USED TO CREATE A LARGER BIGGER STONE). IT HAS A GISA CERTIFICATE THAT ALSO INDICATED IT IS A COMPOSITE RUBY.
MY CONCLUSION:  NATURAL RUBY FRACTURE WITH LEAD GLASS FILLING

SIZE: 6.8mm x 4.3mm

DISCLAIMER: I AM NO GEMSTONE EXPERT AND COULD PERFORM ONLY A LIMITED NUMBER OF PRELIMARY TESTS (SCRATCH TEST; UV TEST; THERMAL TEST) THAT I COULD CONFIRM SOME OF THIS GEMSTONES NATURE AND PROPERTIES. THIS GEMSTONES BELONGED TO A FAMILY MEMBER THAT HAS PASSED AWAY. HE COLLECTED GEMSTONES DURING THE EARLY TWENTY FIRST CENTURY MANY WERE BOUGHT ON EBAY AND OTHERS BY TRAVELLING TO OTHER COUNTRIES. RUBY GEMSTONES CAN BE SYNTHESIZED AND ADVANCED INSTRUMENTS ARE NEEDED TO INDICATE IF NATURAL OR LAB MADE.

RUBIES: Firstly Rubies is one of the four precious gemstones amongst Saphire, Diamond and Emerald. Real rubies rank 9 on the Mohs scale of Hardness.
Ruby is a red type of the corundum mineral, along with sapphire. Sapphires have each color of the corundum, except red, which is the color of the ruby. Corundum is relatively common in nature, and is completely colourless. Chromium causes the red colour in rubies.
Corundum once found wide application as an industrial abrasive like sandpaper. Gem corundum is mined almost exclusively from gem gravel deposits. Historically, production has been from Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, India and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Rubies are known as the King of Gemstones and Myanmar and Thailand honor the corundum ruby as their national stone. More recent important sources include East African countries of Madagascar, Tanzania and Mozambique.
The color and clarity of rubies and sapphires is commonly enhanced by heat treatment. This is today the rule rather than the exception.

COMPOSITE RUBIES:
Filling cracks and fissures with lead glass is a common cosmetic treatment to boost the appeal of low-quality rubies. The glass fill helps to stabilize a not so great stone. The problem is this: it creates a gemstone that can easily be damaged or destroyed. Without extreme care, you'll end up with a ruined ruby.
A lead glass filled ruby is worth under $10 a carat compared to a natural ruby which currently goes for a few thousand dollars to several thousand dollars a carat.
These gemstones are ruby and glass composites and in many cases the glass can constitute up to 50% of the gemstone.
