Hardcover, first published 1985 by Jonathan Ball. The jacket is whole, but is rubbed and edge-worn. As this book is an ex-library book, it also has two library labels stuck to the spine, one at the head and one at the foot. The boards are bumped in places, with shelf wear to the bottom edges, and several small white marks / scrapes on the front. The inside front paste-down has a small brown mark on it, and a corresponding one on the page opposite, where the author has dedicated the book to a previous owner, and signed it "Jake". The reverse of this page has a Johannesburg Public Library label stuck to it. The half title page has the remnants of a blue label still stuck to it. The title page has been signed again by the author, this time "GF Jacobs". This page also has remnants of two more library labels pasted in. The following two pages contain numbers in pen, and yet another small label. Thereafter the pages are clean and unmarked. From the jacket: "His career in the army saw him win the sword of honour on his cadet course, become a Major in the Royal Marines during the Second World War, achieve the incredible as 'Military Governor' of Sumatra at the age of twenty-three and win the OBE."
