Pot size 14cm
Commonly known as: Polka Dot Begonia, Angel Wing Begonia
Botanical name: Begonia maculata
The Begonia Polka Dot (Begonia maculata) is a showstopper of the plant world. Its elongated, angel-wing shaped leaves are decorated with striking white spots, while the undersides glow in a deep, rich red. Originally from Brazil, this begonia has become a favourite among indoor growers who want something bold yet manageable.
Light
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun will scorch its delicate leaves, while too little light can dull the colour and slow its growth.
💧 Watering
Keep the soil lightly moist during the growing season, but avoid soggy conditions. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Begonia roots are sensitive, so it's better to water from the bottom or ensure the pot has excellent drainage.
🌡 Temperature & Humidity
Polka Dot Begonias love warmth (1826°C) and appreciate higher humidity. In dry homes, group them with other plants or use a pebble tray to keep the air moist.
🪴 Soil & Repotting
For strong roots, plant in our Aroid Mix, or make your own with Barks Unlimited Potting Soil and Perlite. Add Bark Chips when repotting to keep things airy. Repot every 12 years to refresh the soil and support healthy growth.
🍃 Fertiliser
Feed every 46 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser like our Controlled Release Fertiliser or boost with Organic Fertiliser. This helps the plant produce its dramatic foliage and seasonal flowers.
🐛 Pests
Polka Dot Begonias are sometimes prone to mealybugs or spider mites. A quick wipe of the leaves and an insecticidal spray will keep them in check.
This plant offers a rare balance it's both hardy and showy, making it perfect for anyone who wants a statement plant that's also easy to live with.
