Authored by Helmut Altner
This is a first hand account from the German Point of view what the Battle of Berlin was like.
Helmut was a teenager at the time and was conscripted into the armed forces.
This book deals with the final desperate 6 weeks of the Thrid Reich's existence.
His regimental command post was located in an underground factory that had last been used for assembling V-Weapons, but had actually been intended for the production of poison gas, and eventually was to be used by the Soviets as a secret headquaters in case of nuclear warfare.
After some basic training on the Eastern Front, Helmut is caught up in the massive Soviet assault on Berlin, fights against turncoat "Seylditz-Troops", retreats and then takes part in the defence of the western suburb of Spandau, where he becomes one of only two survivors of his company of teenagers.
An abortive attempt to desert leads to him fighting in the battle for the Olympic Stadium in the U-Bahn tunnels toward the city centre.
Returning to barracks, he then takes part in the break out to the west that turns into a bloodbath for soldiers and civilians alike, only to be wounded and captured.
