Surviving as a Jew when your relatives are murdered in Nazi Germany.
Josef is 16 years old and a mathematical genius when Goebbels' proclamation bans Jewish students from attending school. Josef is sent to continue his education under a group of scientists, many as vulnerable as he, who escape persecution by "contributing to the war effort". These years at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin were the best of Josef's life ... even as his aunt, uncle and eventually also his mother were sent to death camps. Josef survives the Holocaust, but his guilt and shame creates a hell to rival Hitler's.
